Purchasing Dendrobates?

So, you want to buy a Poison Dart Frog, eh? I cant blame you, they truly are beautiful creatures. Sure, they would make a great conversation piece, or look nice in a terrarium, but are you ready for the responsibility that goes with them? This is not your low maintenance frog, such as your Whites or Grey tree frogs. You can expect to spend about an hour a day on your frogs, mabey more depending on how many you decide to get. An hour does not seem like much, but think about it this way, 7 days in a week, 1 hour a day, that's 7 hours a week, 4 weeks in a month, that's 28 hours in a month. I know 28 hours seems like nothing spread out over a month, but other things come up too, such as emergency tank cleaning due to contamination, or mysterious deaths. And don't think that you wont be spending all of your free time watching your new beautiful frogs, trust me, once you get them, you wont be able to keep your eyes off them for the first few months. If you don't have a automatic misting system, your going to need to spray the tank down usually at least twice a day too. Feeding these frogs is probably the hardest thing to handle, if you have a good supply of food, then your a step ahead of everyone else. If you plan on breeding your dart frogs, you can expect to add another hour to your time everyday to take care of the eggs and tadpoles, which need their water and food changed everyday. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get you to decide against buying a dart frog, but I just want you to know what your getting your self into, its a big deal, it really is. If you still want to buy some dart frogs, then the rest of the page was written especially for you.

What too look for when buying a frog:

      • Captive Bred? Find out if the frog is wild caught or captive bred.
      • Size? How big do you want it? Does it look healthy? plump? skinny? cuts? spots? growths?
      • Color? How does it's color look?
      • Food? Is it eating?
      • Parasites? If the frog is wild caught, it probably has parasites, can you afford to treat your frogs for parasites?
      • Sex? What sex is the frog? Will it get along with others of the same sex?
      • Seller? What's the person selling the frog like? Do they seem reputable?
      • Cost? Is it overpriced? Underpriced? If underpriced, ask the seller why.
