A lot of people have written me asking me about what other animals can be caged with their frogs in same setup. Well, theres really no strait forward answer, but if you do some research before you set up your tank, you can set it up in a way that will give you more options on what else you can put in there. Another important thing to remember is that you cant control the animals instinct to eat what ever it can fit in its mouth, so you want to make sure that what you put in there wont end up as lunch or vice versa.
At one time I had a large community tank going, it contained the following creatures:
- 6 Red-Eyed Tree Frogs
- 2 Grey Tree Frogs
- 4 Green Anoles
- 2 Cuban Anoles
- 1 Parsons Chameleon
- 1 Day Gecko
- 20+ Guppies and other Tropical Fish
The tank was stunning, everyone got along. The only thing I noticed was that every once in awhile, the chameleon would try and catch the guppies with his tongue. Everything else was too big for the chameleon to eat. Some of the frogs came out at different times. The Red-Eyes are nocturnal and rarely move during the day, so the chameleon never saw them. The only thing about this setup was the cost of feeding everyone, it got rather expensive eventually and I had to cut down on the amount of items that were in there. This was my experience, the same may not be so good for you, or it could even be better. Just be careful and research before you buy.
Heres a small list of things to keep in mind when thinking about a multi-species setup:
- Cost?
Can you afford to feed everyone?
- Space?
Is there enough space in the tank for everyone?
- Food?
What does everyone eat? Will someone turn into food?
- Climate?
Is everyone from the same climate area?
- Cover?
Who likes to hide from others?
- Infection?
Is everyone captive bred or wild caught? You don't want to spread parasites to your other animals because of a wild caught tree frog.
